TheatreRats presents a fresh reinvention of William Shakespeare’s romantic triumph Romeo and Juliet, in which class, race and destiny collide to the pulse of a contemporary, original rap, hip-hop and jazz score. The show is helmed by the company’s Artistic Director, Alexis M. Hadsall (Spike Heels, Agrippina).
TheatreRats’ production plays April 24-May 3, Thursdays and Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 7pm. All performances are at The Medicine Show Theatre, 549 W. 52nd St., 3rd floor, between 10th and 11th Avenues.
With original music by recording artists 2Tru Dynasty, Greyhound, Racial Tension and Duwende, TheatreRats’ Romeo and Juliet takes its story of two star-crossed lovers – Inwood Dominican Romeo (Francis Mateo) and Upper Eastside Caucasian Juliet (Caitlin Davies) – to the streets of Manhattan. Music-filled, fast-moving and celebratory in the face of impending tragedy, this production promises to be an entertaining and unique exploration of The Bard’s classic.
